The Waldrof is a classic salad that can almost never be missing from the menu of any celebration that likes good food. It is a very popular recipe because of how easy it is to prepare and because of how delicious and good “equipment” it makes with most of the dishes that accompany it.
This salad was first created in 1893 in the famous New York hotel, Hotel Waldorf, and was part of the menu offered by the hotel. When it was part of the recipes of the creator’s book, it became really famous and three years later it was already part of the dishes at all parties and from there it began to be known all over the world.
The Waldrof salad recipe is very simple and originally it consists of only three ingredients that are: mayonnaise, apple and celery, and it underwent very rapid adaptations in which walnuts, lettuce, raisins, pine nuts, and even a flavored version were added with mustard.

Waldrof salad garnished with cardamom and honey
Ingredients
- 1 red apple, cored and diced.
- 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and diced.
- 1 cup red seedless grapes, halved.
- 1 cup celery, diced.
- 1 cup of fresh walnuts.
For the dressing
- ½ cup mayonnaise.
- 2 tablespoon of pure honey.
- ½ tsp. ground cardamom.
- Salt and pepper.
- Lettuce to serve.
Instructions
Combine the mayonnaise, honey, and cardamom. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix with pieces of apples, grapes, celery and walnuts.
